God Part 3

i don't believe in beatles, i don't believe in rock
i dont't believe in the cutting edge, that's just journalist talk
i don't believe in the cover story or the gospel chart
you can easily hit number one with a bullet and totally miss the heart
but i oh i believe in God

i don't believe in politics while the masses stay unfed
til the leaders change priorities and supply the poor with bread
don't believe in the revolution or the empty words of peace
you can tear all of the governments down you still won't find release
but i oh i believe in God

i don't believe the papacy when fallible lies are told
if they really want to help the poor they should sell some of their gold
and i don't believe the aryans are the master race
if you think that Jesus is white you'd be surprised to see His face
but i oh i believe in God

don't believe in esperanto or the dreams of babylon
if we all spoke the same language, long ago we would'a built the bomb
and i don't believe in money the way lives are bought and sold
and when this world is ended bankrupt i'm gonna walk the streets of gold

no i don't believe in evolution, i was born to be free
ain't gonna let no anthropologist make a monkey out of me
and i don't believe the devil, i ain't gonna be his slave
and when i'm finished dying i'm gonna bust out of my grave
oh i yeh i
oh i - I and i
oh i oh i believe in God
i believe in God
i believe in God
i believe in God

- Larry Norman

God Part 2

Don't believe the devil I don't believe the book
But the truth is not the same without the lies he made up
I don't believe in excess sucess is to give
I don't believe in riches but you should see where I live
I... I believe in love

Don't believe in forced entry I don't believe in rape
But everytime she passes by wild thoughts escape
I don't believe in deathrow
skidrow or the gangs
Don't believe in the Uzi it just went off in my hand
I... I believe in love

Don't believe in cocaine I got a speedball in my head
I could cut and crack you open... did you hear what I said?
Don't believe them when they tell me there ain't no cure
The rich stay healthy the sick stay poor
I... I believe in love

I don't believe in Goldman his type like a curse
Instant karma's gonna get him if I don't get him first
I don't believe that Rock 'N Roll can really change the world
As it spins in revolution spirals and turns
I... I believe in love

I don't believe in the 60's in the golden age of pop
You glorify the past when the future dries up
I heard a singer on the radio late last night
Says he's gonna kick the darkness till it bleeds daylight*
I... I believe in love

I feel like I'm falling
like I'm spinning on a wheel
It always stops beside a name a presence I can feel
I... I believe in love

- U2

Lovers in a Dangerous Time

Don't the hours grow shorter as the days go by
You never get to stop and open your eyes
One day you're waiting for the sky to fall
And next you're dazzled by the beauty of it all
When you're lovers in a dangerous time
Lovers in a dangerous time

These fragile bodies of touch and taste
This vibrant skin this hair like lace
Spirits open to the thrust of grace
Never a breath you can afford to waste

When you're lovers in a dangerous time
Lovers in a dangerous time
When you're lovers in a dangerous time
Lovers in a dangerous time

When you're lovers in a dangerous time
Sometimes you're made to feel as if your love's a crime
Nothing worth having comes without some kind of fight
Got to kick at the darkness till it bleeds daylight

The First Christmas Morning

Away in the east shines a star in the sky
That leads us to where He is born
And bearing good tidings and gifts we shall give
To Him on this first Christmas morning
To Him on this first Christmas morning

Holy our journey and holy our love
That takes us to find and adore Him
And blessed the baby that sleeps in his bed
And wakes on this first Christmas morning
And wakes on this first Christmas morning

Ahhh-Ahhh Alleluia
Ahhh-Ahhh Alleluia
Ahhh-Ahhh Alle
Ahhh-Ahhh Alle
Ahhh-Ahhh Alleluia

The Lord in His wisdom, the Lord in His grace
Has given to man a redeemer
To save us from sin and to show us the light
That shines on this first Christmas morning
And will shine ever each Christmas morning

Conservative Christian, Right Wing Republican, Straight, White, American Male

Conservative Christian, right wing Republican, straight, white, American male.
Gay bashin’, black fearin’, poor fightin’, tree killin’, regional leaders of sales
Frat housin’, keg tappin’, shirt tuckin’, back slappin’ haters of hippies like me.
Tree huggin’, peace lovin’, pot smokin’, porn watchin’ lazyass hippies like me.
Tree huggin’, love makin’, pro choicen, gay weddin’, widespread diggin’ hippies like me.
Skin color-blinded, conspiracy-minded, protestors of corporate greed,
We who have nothing and most likely will ‘till we all wind up locked up in jails
By conservative Christian, right wing Republican, straight, white, American males.

Diamonds and dogs, boys and girls, living together in two separate worlds
Following leaders of mountains of shame, looking for someone to blame.

Diamonds and dogs, boys and girls, living together in two separate worlds
Following leaders of mountains of shame, looking for someone to blame.
I know who I like to blame:

Conservative Christian, right wing Republican, straight, white, American males,
Soul savin’, flag wavin’, Rush lovin’, land pavin’ personal friends to the Quayles
Quite diligently workin’ so hard to keep the free reins of this Democracy
From tree huggin’, peace lovin’, pot smokin’, barefootin’ folk-singin’ hippies like me.

Say what?! I liked it! When did Liberal get to be a bad name or adjative? Aren't we for the little guys, the disenfrancised, the middle class? What better to be than a Liberal American, for social justice and equal opportunity for all.

You got to ac-cent-tchu-ate the positive
E-lim-i-nate the negative
And latch on to the affirmative
Don't mess with mister inbetween

You got to spread joy up to the maximum
Bring gloom down to the minimum
And have faith, or pandemonium
Liable to walk upon the scene

To illustrate my last remark
Jonah in the whale, Noah in the ark,
What did they do, just when everything looked so dark?
Man, they said, we better

Ac-cent-tchu-ate the positive
E-lim-i-nate the negative
And latch on to the affirmative
Don't mess with mister inbetween

For Mr Braling:

Pacing the Cage

Sunset is an angel weeping
Holding out a bloody sword
No matter how I squint I cannot
Make out what it's pointing toward
Sometimes you feel like you live too long
Days drip slowly on the page
You catch yourself
Pacing the cage

I've proven who I am so many times
The magnetic strip's worn thin
And each time I was someone else
And every one was taken in
Powers chatter in high places
Stir up eddies in the dust of rage
Set me to pacing the cage

I never knew what you all wanted
So I gave you everything
All that I could pillage
All the spells that I could sing
It's as if the thing were written
In the constitution of the age
Sooner or later you'll wind up
Pacing the cage

Sometimes the best map will not guide you
You can't see what's round the bend
Sometimes the road leads through dark places
Sometimes the darkness is your friend
Today these eyes scan bleached-out land
For the coming of the outbound stage
Pacing the cage
Pacing the cage

I happened to think of this because he's coming to our parish next Sunday.

Sin For A Season

There's a sweaty hand handling his cocktail napkin
"come on up and see me" is scribbled with a gold pen
"but you'd better ring twice"
seven months after his little indiscretion
he sits with his wife at a therapy session
for a little advice
"if the healing happens as the time goes by
tell me why I still can't look her in the eye"

"God I'm only human, got no other reason..."
sin for a season...

There's a shaky hand shaking with the hand of her hostess
drank a little much, but she'll drive herself home
if she can make it to her car
she never saw the sign or the boy with his daddy
driving home late from their very first ballgame
and they don't get far
now the years run together as her guilt goes wild
she still sees the body of an only child

"God I'm only human, got no other reason..."
sin for a season...

Wealthy lips say "keep us from the Evil One"
while the praying hands prey with deliberate cunning
on the carcass of the cold
gonna get the Good Lord to forgive a little sin
get the slate cleaned so he can dirty it again
and no one else will ever know
but he reaps his harvest as his heart grows hard
no man's gonna make a mockery of God

"I'm only human, got no other reason..."
sin for a season...

- Steve Taylor
