Lake Marie

Chorus:
We were standing
Standing by peaceful waters
Standing by peaceful waters
Whoa Wah Oh Wha Oh
Whoa Wah Oh Wha Oh

Many years ago along the Illinois-Wisconsin Border
There was this Indian tribe
They found two babies in the woods
White babies
One of them was named Elizabeth
She was the fairer of the two
While the smaller and more fragile one was named Marie
Having never seen white girls before
And living on the two lakes known as the Twin Lakes
They named the larger and more beautiful Lake, Lake Elizabeth
And thus the smaller lake that was hidden from the highway
Became known forever as Lake Marie

Repeat Chorus:

Many years later I found myself talking to this girl
Who was standing there with her back turned to Lake Marie
The wind was blowing especially through her hair
There was four Italian sausages cooking on the outdoor grill
And Man, they was ssssssssizzlin'
Many years later we found ourselves in Canada
Trying to save our marriage and perhaps catch a few fish
Whatever seemed easier
That night she fell asleep in my arms
Humming the tune to 'Louie Louie'
Aah baby, We gotta go now.

Repeat Chorus:

The dogs were barking as the cars were parking
The loan sharks were sharking the narcs were narcing
Practically everyone was there
In the parking lot by the forest preserve
The police had found two bodies
Nay, naked bodies
Their faces had been horribly disfigured by some sharp object
Saw it on the news
On the TV news
In a black and white video
You know what blood looks like in a black and white video?
Shadows, Shadows that's exactly what it looks like
All the love we shared between her and me was slammed
Slammed up against the banks of Old Lake Marie, Marie

We were standing
Standing by peaceful waters
Standing by peaceful waters
Whoa Wah Oh Wha Oh
Whoa Wah Oh Wha Oh
Whoa Wah Oh Wha Oh
Whoa Wah Oh Wha Oh
Standing by peaceful waters
Peaceful waters
Standing by peaceful waters
Peaceful waters
Standing by peaceful waters
Peaceful waters
Standing by peaceful waters
Peaceful waters
Ahh baby, we gotta go now

- John Prine

This one puts me in mind of RB's mummies:

Tie Me At The Crossroads

(Chorus)
Tie me at the crossroads when I die
Hang me in the wind 'til I get good and dry
And the kids that pass can scratch their heads
And say "who was that guy?"
Tie me at the crossroads when I die

Looking outward see what you can see
By the time you look at something it's already history
As the echoes of our passing fade, all there is to say
Is, "you know I loved you all in my particular way"

(Chorus)

It's more blessed to give than it is to receive
Except when it comes to free advice I believe
Here I go anyway, back seat driving tonight
Move fast, stay cool, keep your eye on the front sight

(Chorus)

- Bruce Cockburn

I sense God more often in Van the Man's lyrics than I do in most "religious" songs.

Guitar virtuoso Phil Keaggy did a terrific cover of this on his album Blue.

When Will I Ever Learn to Live in God?

The sun was setting over Avalon
The last time we stood in the west
Suffering long time angels enraptured by Blake
Burn out the dross innocence captured again

Standing on the beach at sunset all the boats
All the boats keep moving slow
In the glory of the flashing light in the evenings glow

When will I ever learn to live in God?
When will I ever learn?
He gives me everything I need and more
When will I ever learn?

You brought it to my attention everything that was made in God
Down through centuries of great writings and paintings
Everything lives in God
Seen through architecture of great cathedrals
Down through the history of time
Is and was in the beginning and evermore shall be

When will I ever learn to live in God?
When will I ever learn?
He gives me everything I need and more
When will I ever learn?

Whatever it takes to fulfill his mission
That is the way we must go
But you've got to do it your own way
Tear down the old, bring up the new

And up on the hillside it's quiet
Where the shepherd is tending his sheep
And over the mountains and the valleys
The countryside is so green
Standing on the highest hill with a sense of wonder
You can see everything is made in God
Head back down the roadside and give thanks for it all

When will I ever learn to live in God?
When will I ever learn?
He gives me everything I need and more
When will I ever learn?

- Van Morrison

Speaking of Phil,

All There is to Know

With every halting step I take
I hang by a thread that will not break.
God loves the wayward child
He longs to be reconciled
To those on the other side of grace.

If we all hunger for the truth,
And if we share these common roots.
In Adam we had our start,
And through him we drift apart,
But there can be a change upon the face.

There is a light that shines in darkness,
There is a lamp that lights the way,
May you find comfort in its glow,
May you know all there is to know,
May you find warmth within its rays.

This is a re-occurring dream.
History's re-occurring theme,
Prisoners of human pride,
An unlikely place to hide
Wondering who will light the way.

There is a light that shines in darkness,
There is a lamp that lights the way,
May you find comfort in its glow,
May you know all there is to know,
May you find warmth within its rays.

- Phil Keaggy & Phil Madeira

That's what I get for copying and pasting not from Phil's site! I have re-copied from Phil's site.

Glad you enjoyed.

Motor Of Love

I Can't Get Over Your Love
No Matter How Hard Life Seems,
There's A Light In My Dreams
Thanks To You.

My Friends Keep Asking Me Why
There's Such A Smile On My Face,
There's A Home At My Place,
Thanks To You.

I Don't Want Anything From You,
Turn On Your Motor Of Love.
Motor Of Love, Motor Of Love.
Heavenly Father Look Down From Above,
I Can't Get Over Your Powerful
Motor Of Love.
I Can't Get Over Your Love
No Matter How Lost I Feel,
I Know My Love Is Real,
Thanks To You.
You Simply Reached Out Your Hand
And Touched Me Deep In My Soul,
I Came In Out Of The Cold,
Thanks To You.

I Won't Steal Anything From You,
You Give Me More Than Enough.
Motor Of Love, Motor Of Love.
Heavenly Father Look Down From Above,
I Can't Get Over Your Powerful
Motor Of Love.
There Was A Time
When I Was Down And Counted Out,
Well I Remember I Felt So Bad
I Nearly Threw Away,
Nearly Threw Away The Keys.
Motor Of Love, Motor Of Love.
Heavenly Father Look Down From Above,
Motor Of Love, Motor Of Love.
Heavenly Father Look Down From Above,
I Can't Get Over Your Powerful
Motor Of Love.

Powerful Motor,
Strong As An Ocean,
Constantly Turning,
Over And Over.

Powerful Motor,
Strong As An Ocean,
Constantly Turning,
Over And Over.

- Paul McCartney

Hear Me Lord

Forgive me lord
Please, those years when I ignored you
Forgive them lord
Those that feel they can't afford you

Help me lord, please
To rise above this dealing
Help me lord, please
To love you with more feeling

At both ends of the road
To the left and the right
Above and below us
Out and in, there's no place that you're not in
Oh, won't you hear me lord

(Hear me lord)
(Hear me lord)
(Hear me lord)
(Hear me lord)

At both ends of the road
To the left and the right
Above and below us
Out and in, there's no place that you're not in
Oh, won't you hear me lord

Help me lord, please
To rise a little higher
Help me lord, please
To burn out this desire

Hear me lord, please
Hear me lord, please

Oh, won't you please, please
Hear me lord
Oh, hear me lord
Hear me lord

Oh, won't you please, please
Hear me lord
My lord, my lord, my lord
(Hear me lord)

Now, won't you please (hear me lord)
My lord, my lord, my lord
Won't you please / (Hear me lord)
Oh, hear me lord, hear me lord
(Hear me lord)

- George Harrison
