One of my favourite guitarists, the great Scotty Moore, has left the building.

If I may ~ Of the many treasured items I was so privileged to receive from Mr. Bradbury during the years we stayed in touch, another very gracious letter sent to my students will forever hold an especially unique place in my mind and heart. This was sent to us after compositions and messages had been shared with Mr. Elie Wiesel, who passed away on July 2, 2016, at the age of 87 yrs.

I clearly recall how diligently every piece of writing was proofed, edited, revised, and retyped (some more than three times) before I allowed students' composed thoughts, questions, and awed impressions to be included in the works forwarded to Mr. Weisel. At that time, he was still serving at Boston University as Professor Emeritus when we communicated with him:

Our exchange took place following the reading of his timeless biographic novel Night, the careful studying of Mr. Weisel's post-WWII career (as a teacher, speaker, and philosopher), and viewing the (intense) interviewed episodes with Mr. Weisel at Auschwitz, conducted by Oprah Winfrey:

The wonderful letter we almost immediately received from Mr. Weisel was one which expressed sincere thanks, kind compliments, thoughtful words of appreciation. . . and a "firm challenge to each of us" to remain committed to well-informed learning and consistent questioning of all matters in which social and personal freedoms were threatened.

When his letter arrived via the school office, I did not open it for my own reading. Rather, I waited until my students had arrived in class later in the afternoon. Only then did I open the envelope in front of the class and read it for each of us to hear for the first time - together.

The teens were silent in their reactions. The eloquence of his response to them (and me) was very evident. We all knew we had touched a man who lived the terrors and evils of the Holocaust's persecution and hatred. If the simple notes from a group of youth in an English class in a rural high school had brought about such a profoundly kind and meaningful return of ideas - then we could only pause for a few moments, quietly humbled and blessed by the author's returned message.

I made sure to present each student with his or her own personal copy of Mr. Weisel's letter. The original copy holds a special place in my library of priceless literary keepsakes. I truly hope some of the students of whom I have written in this post took a moment to peacefully recall the powerful thoughts Mr. Weisel shared with our class in such a meaningful fashion. We were honored and touched by his humanity throughout these experiences . . .

About ten years ago, we were awaiting an afternoon flight out of DC for a visit with family members in Texas. It was a quiet early holdover. Across the hall in an adjacent departure locale was a very familiar looking gentleman. He sat quietly, reading and visiting with a woman with whom he obviously was traveling. The man was nattily dressed, wore sunglasses, and seemed rather content, peacefully awaiting his own flight which was headed to England.

After a few more respectful and cautious glances over, I realized "it was Gene Wilder." My wife and our boys had seen many of his classic movies together in theaters and at home. So, after building up my courage - and persuading my wife of what I was about to do, I slowly approached and greeted Mr. Wilder.

I thanked him for the roles we had so enjoyed as the boys were growing up. He preferred not to make much of celebrity status, and indicated he had been on the road for several days and was a bit tired. He asked about my family, and when I asked him if it would be imposing to also have them come over to meet him, Mr. Wilder said he would be pleased to do so.

My wife and boys did just that. As is her knack in conversation, my wife hit it off with him. Several minutes of exchange ensued! He was a gentleman and friendly in the time we shared.

As more people began to arrive, we bid him farewell and safe travels. He then moved to a more seclude area before he and his personal secretary were called for their flight. Interesting (and surprising) how famous people so often appreciate these simple moments of personal expression! Thank you, Mr. Wilder.

Two wonderfully talented and quality individuals. Their bios are different in so many ways. Yet, they tell the same story of their love of their games and the way each filled their lives.

Sad to lose one so incredibly young and another after all those memorable years!

Feeling a bit freaked out. An older married couple I've known for decades just passed away within three days of each other. When I went to look up the obituaries learned the man who just did such a wonderful job trimming my trees also passed away! He was younger than I am! This was a guy who would hang 60 feet in the air harnessed to a tree limb with a rope and passed away in his sleep! Also just got a mystery gift and a phantom phone call. Phantom calls are common on the land lines here but this was to my cell phone!
