The 1984 animated apocalyptic short film There Will Come Soft Rains is inspired by the 1950 science fiction short story by Ray Bradbury about a lone smart house which continues to stand after nuclear annihilation. The title is taken from the 1918 poem by Sara Teasdale published during World War I and the Spanish flu pandemic. The house continues to function as if its inhabitants were still alive. The film is in Russian with English subtitles. The mechanical main character is a sort of huge robot with an Imperial Storm Trooper type mask and a giant claw which reaches down to perform tasks. The electric mice of the story, sort of a Roomba device, are portrayed. The automated devices continue to function until upset by the forces of nature. This is an interesting little film but more a reimagining inspired by the story than an adaptation of the story. | |||
