| RIP actor Allan Arbus, best known as shrink Sidney Friedman in M.A.S.H.(Unbelievably, he was 95. This means he was well into his 50s during M.A.S.H.. I had no idea, probably because he acted as if he was a contemporary of Hawkeye and co. He was also in the now-forgotten, and under-rated, TV series version of Alan Alda's The Four Seasons, plus a ton of other stuff.) |

| George Jones, one of the last of the country-pop icons. His recording, with Tammy Wynette, of Take Me, is sublime.

| I had the chance to meet and talk with Mr Harryhausen on several occasions and can say that, like his dear friend Ray Bradbury, he was an extremely kind and down-to-earth gentleman, despite his great fame. While his passing fills me with sadness, it also brought back one very funny memory. Ray B., Ray H. and Forry Ackerman were all guests of honor at a special screening of the 1933 version of KING KONG in Omaha, Nebraska in 1998, to celebrate the film's 65th anniversary. There was a party the evening before the screening which I was lucky enough to be able to attend, at which time I had Mr. Harryhausen autograph the cover of a 1938 issue of IMAGINATION, the magazine edited by Forry and published by the Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society (LASFS) of which all three were members in 1938. Mr. Harryhausen had drawn the cover art for the issue. I still remember how excited Mr. Harryhausen was at seeing this magazine and his youthful work. He showed the magazine to his wife, saying, "Diana, look at this! I did the cover art for this magazine way back in 1938!" Mrs Harryhausen was obviously not impressed, as she took one look at the cover and said (in good humor), "Hmmm. Looks just like you." Incidentally, that 1938 magazine also contains an article, "Mathematica Menace", by one "Oz Bradbury". (I wonder whatever happened to that guy?) Here's a link to that wonderful Harryhausen cover. http://www.isfdb.org/wiki/imag...0/MGNTNSPTMB1938.jpg |
