G-Force, thank you for the information about their appearances. I only wish that I had the necessary funds to fly out on the pretext of visiting my son and his family and then make a side trip to see Ray and Sam. Darn!

Thanks for the details. I knew about the 12:00 appearance in Ackerman Union, which requires tickets, but was unable to find the bookseller who was sponsoring the book signing on the LA Times websight. I hope to either get my copy on Friday at B&N, or on Saturday, at my alma mater: U (rah rah rah) C (Rah Rah Rah) L (Rah Rah Rah) A (Rah Rah Rah), U-C-L-A fight, fight, fight! That felt soooo goood!

I gave a lecture at UCLA on Hawthorne, shamanism and folklore once. Does that count for anything? My paper's premise was that Hawthorne saw science as attempting to supplant the role of the shaman; but in two stories, the scientist fails in that endeavor (Rapaccini's Daughter and The Birthmark) -- both great stories! Science can't fully replace poetry/religion/intuition/emotionalism, etc.

I feel so bad for those of you still waiting to receive your copy of Sam's book. The B & N in Plantation, Florida got their five copies right on April 5th and they called me as I had reserved one. I picked it up the next day, started reading it and really couldn't put it down until I had finished. Like I emailed Sam, the only bad thing about a good book is that it ends too soon.
