Lost Bradbury Stories?

I just finished my second reading of "Driving Blind" and noticed the copyright extension page... of the twenty-one stories in the book, 17 are original to the collection, copyright 1997. Of the other four, two (c. 1997 and 1995) previously appeared in magazines. One other (c. 1993) was apparently written for an anthology edited by Robert Bloch, and the final story, "That Old Dog Lying in the Dust," was published IN NINETEEN SEVENTY-FOUR under the title "Mexicali Mirage" in a magazine.

My question is this:

Bradbury waited 23 years to take this old story and put it in an anthology. How many other stories by Bradbury are out there, in magazines, or mixed collections with other authors, possibly under different titles? What are we missing? And is there any plan to eventually take all these "lost" stories and put them in book form? I worry there isn't, because I KNOW R.B. put out books between '74 and '97, (yes, there was a dry spell of ten years or so around '86-'96, but still...) so he apparently isn't methodically taking what he's written for magazines in the interval between books and putting them in the next book out.
Just wondering, and hoping there aren't any stories doomed to non-book existence...

That information, or at least links for determining it, can be found here: https://raybradburyboard.com/eve/forums/a/frm/f/3791083901

At last count, there were still enough PUBLISHED "lost" stories to fill several collections, and I think some of these bibliographies may even include UNPUBLISHED works!

I agree that you should take a look at the other thread that dandelion refers to. On my website (click on "Books", then select "Short Story Finder") you will find listed every published story, correct up to the date I last revised the page.

Eller & Touponce's The Life of Fiction additionally lists several pages of stories and story fragments that have never seen print.

Since at least the mid-1990s, Ray's bibliographer and archivist Donn Albright has been identifying quality unpublished and published-but-not-collected stories in the archive and bringing them to Ray's attention. If Ray likes such stories he will typically polish them up a bit and include them in a short story collection. The proportion of "resurrected" stories in Ray's short story collections has gradually increased over time, and unfortunately the copyright information in the collections is often incorrect or inaccurate, which makes it difficult to be sure whether a given story is new or old. With The Cat's Pajamas, I'm pleased to say, Ray actually declares the year that each story first saw print.

Eventually, I'm sure all of Ray's stories will be collected, although this inevitably runs the risk of scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Good point! Of course, some of the unpublished/uncollected stories have remained so because Ray is not pleased with them. I think this is his absolute right. There have been instances where people have sought to bring back into print stories he would rather have left alone, such as with A Memory of Murder. I'm sure one day there will be a complete collection of his stories, much like the mammoth collections of Philip K. Dick or Theodore Sturgeon stories.

Not long ago I picked up a copy of “Long After Midnight”. I thought that I had all of Ray’s story collections but never knew of this one until dandelion mentioned it once. The more I learn about Ray the more I realize how much I still have to learn. To borrow from Own Johnson’s “Lawrenceville Stories”, I guess I’m still uncooked beefsteak because I have a long way to go before I’m well done.

As far as going all out for "Long After Midnight," I'm not really well done myself. That distinction belongs to this guy: https://raybradburyboard.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/6791...371041011#7371041011

dandelion,
Thanks for the link. What some people will do! --My best to you.

And for any of you proud owners of “The Cat’s Pajamas” who haven’t noticed, there’s an almost missing story on page 133; “Triangle”. It was omitted from the table of contents.

yeah, I was going to say, the bottom of Ray's barrel is a lot higher than the bottom of most people's barrels.

Braling II,

Just looked up the threads from your reference to typos. All I can say about your list of discovered typos is that you are the master.

Wow.
It's awfully hard to take knowing these are "out there somewhere"!
Great list, though. I think I'll print it and bring it along next trip to the ol' used book shop.

A complete list of uncollected stories, including these and others, appears in this thread: https://raybradburyboard.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/3791...941065901#1941065901

It has not been updated as of "The Cat's Pajamas," so any previously uncollected stories appearing in that collection should be removed from current "uncollected" lists.
