| Prior to a week or two ago, I had never heard the term "special snowflake" and now it's all over the place. Some definitions: http://www.urbandictionary.com...Snowflake%20SyndromeNot quite sure what to make of all this. On the one hand, anyone intervening on their own behalf or that of others being treated rudely by demanding basic courtesy is blasted as a "snowflake" who "can't take it." The more afraid people become to speak out against bullying and hate speech, the more incivility is allowed to the point where it's hard to imagine how bad things may become. On the other hand, there are egregious cases such as schools banning classic works of literature because one person doesn't like words contained in these works when the words reflect the real speech of people in that time and place and therefore portray related attitudes. Frankly, there are some very touchy types out there who take offense at next to nothing. When Ray Bradbury's book Fahrenheit 451 began being widely used in schools, he was outraged to learn certain editions had been printed with "offensive" words censored out without consulting the author. Students now need parental permission to read this book about not being allowed to read books. |
