It was with sadness that I saw, in its advertisement in the current issue of FIRSTS Magazine, that the Mystery and Imagination Bookshop in Glendale, California will close its doors on July 31, 2016. I have wonderful memories of signings that Ray Bradbury did at that store, including several of his birthday celebrations, as well as of great purchases I made on other occasions. (One of my favorites is a beautiful signed first edition of Ray's TWICE TWENTY-TWO that I found many years ago in the store's previous Glendale location.) While Mystery and Imagination will continue to sell books via the internet, there is nothing like browsing a brick and mortar used book store to fill me with happiness (even if I don't find anything I need), and such stores are vanishing at an alarming rate. For those who like to browse the postings on this site, you will find many great pictures from the times Ray did signings at the store. | |||
