Randy, you sent me a copy of the production. Really something! Thanks again.

For me many Q's about the works remain, however. We are RB fans for various reasons, and the history and inspiration behind things often prove as interesting as the works themselves. Same with this album.

IE, Any details to share on the Where, Why, When, How, etc. of the album? This could be from Randy, Bob, or Dennis. I know many here would appreciate the story that brought the Dark Carnival music into existence.

It has the stuff of a musical in its composition.

Actually, the entire album should be released on CD. As many as possible of the original musicians should get together and record "The Lake" as a bonus track. It should include liner notes with such things as "then and now" pictures and a history of the inspiration of the music and interesting things about recording it.

It would be really great if all of us who worked on the album could get together for a reunion and record "THE LAKE" song....
I got another email from Bob, and he wants no more "FREEBIES" given out of the album, He's trying to find a label to re-release it.
So your's are the last free ones that I made.
Let's hope it will be on CD soon, if the response is high from people that want it.

Hi Randy-

Dennis was not in on the recording session with the horns. At least, not that I
remember. I worked alone on those sessions with a band. Ray paid for the
session. I don�t remember the name of the studio. It was on Melrose, I THINK!

There are no photos of the sessions. None that I have, anyway.

I also need to clear up some misinformation that I saw on the Bradbury message
board. Dennis told you that Bill Howe wrote the music to the title tune,
"October Country". That is partly true. In fact, the music was written by Bill
and me in my trailer house at Toul-Rossiere Air Base in France, after Dennis had
already left the service and was living in England. My then wife, Susan, Bill
and I had a singing group called, "Fog City". Bill was living in Germany at that
moment, and commuted over to Toul-Rossiere on the weekends. He came up with lots
of tunes, chord progressions and whole melodies, that the three of us would hash
out and turn into contemporary "folk" songs. He came up with the chord
progression for the tune that became "October Country". He and I together,
worked out a melody to fit the lyrics that I came up with in about 15 minutes,
smoking Salem cigarettes and drinking cheap wine. Susan came up with the harmony
part. We recorded it sometime later when I was transferred to Germany, at the
American Forces Network radio station in Kaiserslautern, Germany, and I sent it
to Ray as a gift of our love. Ray wrote back telling us that it was beautiful
and encouraged me to write ten more songs to be put into an album to be called,
"The October Country" when I got back to the states. I did just that, with tunes
written and co-written with Bill, Dennis Pfister and Larry Delinger. I lived in
Santa Barbara at the time and met some guys who had a bar band called "The
Ensenada Brass." I believe that Jarrel was a member of that band. We got
together and recorded an initial session at the place I think was on Melrose,
which Ray paid for. Sometime later, after initially working for Bill Medley at
Medley/Patterson/West where we did a record called, "Get Loaded On Love" that
Bill, Susan and I wrote, on which Dennis played guitar, and sadly, which never
went into release, I played them the recording of "October Country." According
to Dennis, and I believe this to be the case, M/P/W did in fact, buy out Bill�s
share of the tune, and it was copyrighted in my name. Shortly after this, I went
to work for Burt Sugarman and Pierre Cossette whose company was called, The
CoBurt Corporation. I pitched the album to Pierre and he pitched it to Tower
Records. Pierre paid for the sweetening sessions to the three or four songs that
I produced at your place, where I added harpsichord, jazz electric guitar,
special audio FX, stereo enhancement and so forth and we completed the album. We
also recorded sometime later, a couple of tunes that I produced for a blues
singer named Chic Streetman. One of these was "Goodnight Irene." Chic is still
singing the blues, living in Seattle.

When the album was done Tower Records swept it up, had Ray and me in for a big
conference wherein they pledged to promote the thing with a concert tour
featuring a group that I was to put together to be called, "The Autumn People"-
hell I even bought a black Nehru outfit in anticipation. Then- shortly before
all this was to unfold and I could get Dennis and Bill and the Ensenada Brass
clued in, Capitol Records (which was the parent of Tower) pulled the plug on the
Tower label and the the whole thing went up in smoke. Capitol released our
record with no fanfare and I stumbled across the two copies that I bought in the
bargain bin at a record store on Sunset Boulevard.

Whatever happened to the master tape or the master disc is a mystery to both Ray
and me.

Back in 1968, I played on an album of songs based on the stories from The October Country. Two singer songwriters from Santa Barbara, Bob Jacobs and Denny (can't remember Denny's last name) wrote the songs, and we recorded it in LA in the spring of 1968. Ray was there for the recording, I was blown away to meet him.
Anyway, I wish I got a copy of the album back then, but I never did. Anyone know where I could find a copy (or hear of it)?

If you still keep in touch with Ray...maybe...just maybe...he has it stuffed (tucked) away in some corner of his abode. I don't think he would throw away something like that. With his wife gone, a couple of his daughters stop in frequently (especially Zana Bradbury)...Zana is very helpful, and she is around her dad a lot in the last years, answering correspondence, sending emails, etc. And then there is his personal driver, Patrick, who might find time to do a search. If not THERE, then WHERE? Right?

As an "up to the minute" sort of guy, I just read Bob's email to Randy in '05'which I think is pretty accurate.

Actually I was at the session with the brass guys and I actually have pictures. Bob seldom went anywhere without a camera. One picture is with Ray, Bob, Susie and myself and the other one is of Ray holding a trumpet standing with the Ensenada brass guys.

Also, we did the tune "Highway Eyes" with Chic Streetman. I wrote the tune from Bob's words.
