You don't say whether you're in college or high school. Some people prefer the MLA format, others prefer different formats. In humanities, the customary format is MLA. Ask your teacher/instructor/professor which is the required or preferred format.

At your school's library, you can get a copy of the MLA guide, and just follow the guidelines there.

The handbooks we typically use at our college are:

THE LITTLE, BROWN HANDBOOK. 7th Edition. H. Ramsey Fowler and Jane E. Aaron. Longman Press, NY. 1998. (Includes guide to the MLA format)

THE NEW CENTURY HANDBOOK. Christine A. Hult and Thomas N. Huckin. Allyn and Bacon, Boston. 1999. (Includes guide to the MLA format)

Hope this helps.

Yes-MLA is really the standard these days. Check also as a fantastic desk tool: "A Writer's Reference" by Diana Hacker. It supplies concise methods on all of your really technical Q's (word choice, grammar, sentence structure, et al). Very useful!
