Joseph Wiseman, who played the evil Dr. No in the first James Bond film of the same name, has died at age 91. While he will likely be best remembered for DR.NO, I will always best remember him for his role as the treacherous revolutionary who led Marlon Brando's Zapata to his death in the film VIVA ZAPATA (written by John Steinbeck). I also had the chance to see Mr, Wiseman on Broadway in 2001 in the stage production of JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG and he was excellent. A very fine actor.

Some more sad news. Collin Wilcox, who played Thedy in the Alfred Hitchcock Hour production of Ray's short story, "The Jar", has died at age 74 of cancer. While Bradbury fans will always remember her performance as the unfaithful and doomed Thedy in "The Jar" ("Here, kitty, kitty..."), she is probably best known for her role as Mayella, the accuser in the film TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD.

Stephen Bowie's excellent Classic TV History Blog has a nice obituary about Collin, here:

Ray Browne, who started the Department of Popular Culture at Bowling Green State University, in Bowling Green, Ohio, and the man who coined the term "popular culture", has died at age 87. While I was not a full-time student at BGSU, I did take a few summer school courses there in the early 1970's when summer jobs for college students were scarce, and had Professor Browne for a English literature class...he was a fine, interesting instructor.

William Nolan also taught a creative writing seminar at BGSU, which ultimately led to the donation, in 1981, of Nolan's incredible Bradbury collection to the BGSU library's Center for Archival Collections.

In Flanders Fields
by John McCrae, May 1915

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
