RAY BRADBURY’S DEDICATIONS:

These are the ones I’ve been able to find. In some cases I have approximated the layout.

DARK CARNIVAL (1947)
To Grant M. Beach [this dedication also appears in The Small Assassin (1962), proving that it is a drastically altered and reduced version of Dark Carnival!]

THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES (1950)
For my wife MARGUERITE with all my love [UK editions insert the word “of”]

THE ILLUSTRATED MAN (1951)
This book is for FATHER, MOTHER, and SKIP, with love

THE GOLDEN APPLES OF THE SUN (1953)

THE OCTOBER COUNTRY (1955)
For who else but AUGUST DERLETH
[this appears in my UK paperback edition (1962), as well as in my Hart-Davis hardcover, but not in my Del Rey edition (1979 reprint). Instead, there is a prefatory note describing the origin of the book and expressing thanks to Derleth, Leigh Brackett and Henry Kuttner. Does anyone have the original US hardcover?]

DANDELION WINE (1957)
For Walter I. Bradbury
Neither uncle nor cousin
But most decidedly
Editor and friend.

A MEDICINE FOR MELANCHOLY (1959)
For Dad,
whose love, very late in life, surprised his son.
And for Bernard Berenson and Nicky Mariano,
who gave me a new world.

FOR
RUPERT HART-DAVIS
IN MEMORY OF
THE TERRIBLE SKIRMISH
THE TEMPORARY LOSS
BUT OUR INEVITABLE VICTORY
AT THE MIRABELLE

SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES (1962)
[Two dedications. This one from my William Morrow hardcover:]
With love
to the memory of
GENE KELLY,
whose performances
influenced and
changed my life

[But this completely different dedication appears in my old Corgi (UK) paperback:]
With gratitude to
JENNET JOHNSON, who taught
me how to write the short story,
and to SNOW LONGLEY HOUSH,
who taught me poetry
at Los Angeles High School
a long time ago,
and to
JACK GUSS
who helped with this novel
not so long ago

R IS FOR ROCKET (1962)
I dedicate this book to all boys who wonder about the Past, run swiftly in the Present, and have high hopes for our Future. [from the introduction.]

THE MACHINERIES OF JOY (1964)
For Ramona,
who cried when she heard
that the Hound of the
Baskervilles was dead …

For Susan,
Who snorted at the same news …

For Bettina,
who laughed …

And for Alexandra,
who told everyone to
just get out of the way …

This book, dear daughters,
with four different kinds
of love, for you.

A MEMORY OF MURDER (1984)
[No dedication. Bradbury didn’t like the idea of the book, but Dell had the reprint rights, so he couldn’t stop it. He did write an introduction—probably reluctantly. Bradbury is quite apologetic about the stories in the collection and asks the reader to judge them kindly!]

douglasSP, a few additions:

1. SWITCH ON THE NIGHT (1955): "for SUSAN MARGUERITE and RAMONA ANNE with love"

2. OCTOBER COUNTRY (1955): the U.S. first edition also contain the dedication, "for who else but August Derleth"

3. "THE CIRCUS OF DR. LAO AND OTHER IMPROBABLE STORIES" (1956); Ray edited this collection of stories written by other authors. At the end of his introduction, he writes: " This collection is dedicated to Saul David, of Bantam Books, who waited three years for the mountain to deliver forth the mouse; and to William F. Nolan, for suggestions and help all down the line."

4. SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES (1962): The U.S. first edition has the same dedication as the Corgi (UK) paperback.

5. ZEN AND THE ART OF WRITING (1973): "to my finest teacher, Jennet Johnson, with love."

6. TWIN HIEROGLYPHS THAT SWIM THE RIVER DUST ((1978): "For my daughter, ALEXANDRA, with all my love".

7. THIS ATTIC WHERE THE MEADOW GREENS (1979): "Remembering the long green and lovely summers in Wisconsin from 1927 through 1933......this one, with love, is for my Aunt Arthurine and my Cousin Vivian and to the memory of my Uncle Inar who seemed so splendid when I was a child that I gave him green wings and flew him away forever in my tales."

8. THE LAST CIRCUS AND THE ELECTROCUTION (1980): "With love to Bruce Francis and Donn Abright because...."

9. THE STORIES OF RAY BRADBURY (1980): the U.S. first edition dedication reads, "And this one, with love, for Nancy Nicolas and Robert Gottlieb, whose arguments about favorites put this book together".

10. A MEMORY OF MURDER (1984): At the end of his introduction, Ray dedicates the book to Leigh Brackett: "I hope that her dear ghost will not mind that this book and its stories are dedicated to her with love."

11. YESTERMORROW (1991): "For WALT DISNEY, who started me on this journey whenI was seven, and to all the others who helped me continue the journey at Disney Imagineering: ROY DISNEY JR., JOHN HENCH, JOHN DECUIR JR.,MARTY SKLAR, VAN ROMANS, MARC DAVIS and TIM DELANEY. and JON JERDE, who convinced me, late in life, that I was some sort of creative consultant, and JODY GREENWALD who dropped me on wires down out of the Shubert Theater flies to land me in a world of Designers, and CAROL SOUCEK KING and WALTON BROWN who caught me and tossed me into the pages of Designers West, to all, my gratitude and love..."

Anyone else have any addition or changes?

Richard, thanks so much for your additions!

I forgot that Ray had edited two anthologies. I have a Bantam edition of TIMELESS STORIES FOR TODAY AND TOMORROW (1952), but I can't spot any dedication, even though I scanned through the long introduction.

I've seen that dedication to THE STORIES OF RAY BRADBURY. I can only assume that it's in the Granada (UK) edition as well, but that one is so deep in a box somewhere that I didn't think it was worth trying to find it.

And THE MEMORY OF MURDER one: well spotted!

And there you have my six hundredth post! It's taken seventeen years, but still!
