booklover2727Dear Mr. Bradbury,
August is Bradbury month for me. I will read one short story per day for the month. I will relish every word that you have written, typed or uttered. Once again, I thank you for your enlightenment. Happy 90th birthday!

Not only old, but now it's August 5th, so he's even older.

fjp451RE: "Parade magazine on Buckles said he lied about his age in 1917 when he was 16 so he could enlist."
American Civil War historians tell of similar accounts frequently played out by youth not old enough to serve with their fellow neighbors and kin. Rather than to tell an untruth, a boy mid-teens in age would put a slip of paper in one of his shoes on which he'd scrawled "18." Thus, when asked by the enlistment officers "What's your age?", the youth could honesty respond, "I am over eighteen!"
(After reading more about Mr. Buckles this afternoon, I have sent him a birthday greeting and a sincere "Thank you for your brave service!")

philnicHappy 540th birthday,
Nicolaus Copernicus, who is also celebrated in today's Google Doodle.
(As a fully paid-up member of the Pedant's Society (History of Science Section), I have to point out that the Google Doodler has represented the Copernican solar system as a flat disc, with planets moving freely. This is actually overlaying our modern (post-Newton) understanding of celestial mechanics. Copernicus, like Ptolemy before him, saw the planets as embedded in crystalline spheres, with the spheres nested one inside the other.)
