Good to know that Thornton is appreciated across the Atlantic, too. He did reach a ripe old age (92), had a very long and very productive career, and left his mark.

Basil Copper, a fine writer of horror, mystery and dark fantasy, has passed away at age 89. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Copper at the 2010 World Horror Convention, held in Brighton in the U.K. He was a truly nice gentleman.

As a wee lad the family lived in the same community as Jonathan Winters. You knew he was having breakfast at Paty's Kitchen because his burgundy Rolls Royce would be parked outside. A very entertaining meal. Also, the owner of the Fremont Centre Theatre (Lissa Reynolds) was in a movie with him...the Fremont being the last play Ray's produced his plays.

Ah, yes - the place at 4310 Arcola Avenue in Toluca Lake, just two blocks from Bob and Dolores Hope, and just down the street from Andy Griffith. I know the neighbourhood. He had, of late, moved to Montecito (now residing in the vicinity of Oprah and John Cleese) where he passed. Both lovely areas.

William Lantry tells this story:

"He came to see some of my one-act plays. At dinner afterward he did his versions of my plays, adding all his own jokes. If you hand him a metaphor, he can make up a joke about that metaphor. If you hand him a spear, he becomes a cannibal. If you hand him a bow-and-arrow, he becomes an Indian. If you hand him your jockey shorts, then you're in trouble."

~ Ray Bradbury on Jonathan Winters

Annette Funicello and Jonathan Winters are two more major icons who will be missed. I didn't realize Ray knew Jonathan. Did he know Annette?

It seems he knew everyone! See Bettina's Facebook for a rather lengthy list of who he knew.
