Martin Gardner, author, philosopher, for years a columnist of Scientific American. Passed away at the young age of 94.
Biography
here.
James Randi writes about the passing of his friend and colleague
here.
Gardner's mathematical books are among my favourites, as is his definitively annotated edition of Lewis Carroll's ALICE.

fjp451What an American icon of pure joy and entertainment for early radio and television! As a kid, I watched him weekly in front of our b&w Zenith.
He always let the "kids say the darnedest things,"

fjp451Yesterday I asked my students the significance of June 6 in history of the free world. A few actually knew our past. Now, another rests with his spirit looking down upon the waving flags and bright green fields...

jktMy Jimmy Dean Story: Around 1967 my father was driving home, on our one rainy day of the year, and he saw a dog on the freeway. My father pulled over, opened the door and the dog jumped in. When he got home he called the out of town phone number on the dog-tag. A few days later we got a return call. The dog belonged to Jimmy Dean. He was a gift and traveled with him on the road. Jimmy Dean said it would be better for the dog to have a stable home and asked if we wanted him. We said yes. That is how I got my Hungarian Sheepdog, a Puli.

Hungarian sausages are good too.
jkt also has a Johnny Cash story, and a Brian Wilson story (as do I!), and a George C Scott story, and many and sundry others, I'm sure.

Wow. The best I can do is:
a Neil Kinnock story, a Jeremy Beadle story, a Christopher Biggins story and an Isla St Clair story.
I hereby challenge you left-pondians to identify the occupations of any of the above!
