“A Mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will She cling to us, and endeavor by Her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts.”
- Washington Irving

Legendary B-movie director Roger Corman has died at age 98. Mr. Corman provided early breaks for some of the most talented directors and actors in film, including Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Ron Howard, Jack Nicholson and Robert De Niro, receiving an honorary Oscar for lifetime achievement in 2009. He also directed THE INTRUDER, a film previously mentioned on this Board, which was based on the novel by close Ray Bradbury friend Charles Beaumont and which was William Shatner’s first film. (The INTRUDER cast also included writers William F. Nolan, George Clayton Johnson, and Mr. Beaumont himself.)

We visited Normandy Beach and nearby villages many years ago. The greetings we received from men and women whom we met in small markets, cafes, and along the routes as we viewed these historic locales were truly humbling. The people of the region were gracious and still expressed sincere appreciation for what young Americans had sacrifice ~ now 80 Years ago!!

Terrible news for the Bradbury community. Donn Albright has passed away. He had the most extensive Bradbury collection and comprehensive list of Ray's work, and is responsible for recovering much work which would have been lost.

Mr. Bob Newhart ~ a classic American Humorist, who entertained my parents, myself, and our sons. "Thank you" for true humor, the likes of which, unfortunately, we do not hear from today's performers.
PEACE!

Greg Hildebrandt, a fine artist who, along with his late twin brother Tim, are perhaps best known for their illustration of the works of Tolkien, has died at age 86. For news of his passing, click on the link below:

And for two photos of Mr. Hildebrandt with Ray Bradbury at the 2008 San Diego ComicCon, click on the link below and scroll down to the last two pictures. I especially like the last one, which shows Mr. Hildebrandt showing Ray one of his pinup drawings, and Ray asking...per Mr. Hildebrandt..."Are you old enough to do that stuff?": Smiler

Director Jeannot Szwarc died today at the age of 85. He had a prolific career in television and films, and is perhaps best know for directing SOMEWHERE IN TIME. That film was based on the novel BID TIME RETURN, written by the fine writer (and close Ray Bradbury friend) Richard Matheson. Mr. Matheson also wrote the film's screenplay. I also have great memories of my favorite segment of the Rod Serling-hosted TV series NIGHT GALLERY, which was also directed by Mr. Szwarc: "Big Surprise", again scripted by Richard Matheson and based on one of his short stories. For more information about Mr. Szwarc's life and career, click on the link below:

And while I posted the link below several years ago, I thought I would add it again for any newcomers to the Board. It will take you to the episode of NIGHT GALLERY that featured "Big Surprise", which (if you don't want to watch the entire episode) begins at about the 28:51 point:
