RichardJack Williamson, Bradbury Mentor and Friend
The link below will take you to a PBS show titled JACK WILLIAMSON: WONDER'S CHILD. Jack Williamson, the dean of modern science fiction writers, was both a mentor to, and friend of, Ray Bradbury during Ray's teenage years, a friendship that lasted for the rest of Mr. Williamson's life until his passing in 2006. This brief documentary appears to be from around 1995 (it mention that Mr. Williamson, who was born in 1908, was 87 at the time of filming), and includes interviews with such writing luminaries as Roger Zelazny and George R.R. Martin. It brought back great memories of the several times I was able to attend the annual Jack Williamson Lectureship at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, where Mr. Williamson was a professor for many years. And I can vouch for the fact that Mr. Williamson was not only a fine writer, but a very kind and thoughtful gentleman as well. (Incidentally, WONDER'S CHILD is the title of Mr. Williamson's excellent autobiography.)

RichardThe following comments by Ray Bradbury appeared in the November 14, 2006 article in the Los Angeles Times regarding Mr. Williamson's passing. Shortly after the article appeared, Ray told me how thankful he was that he was able to publicly pay tribute to his old friend and teacher after his passing:
“'Jack Williamson was one of the great science-fiction writers,' writer Ray Bradbury told The Times on Monday. 'He did a series of novels which affected me as a young writer with dreams. I met him at 19, and he became my best friend and teacher.'”
"Bradbury said he showed Williamson some 'awful stories' he had written, 'and he was very kind and didn’t mention how terrible they were. He shaped my life; he was very quiet and unassuming and respected my dream and let me be awful for a long time until I got to be good.'”
