Nightshade
Oh, alll riiight!

"And on his way he would see the cottages and homes with their dark windows, and it was not unequal to walking through a graveyard where only the faintest glimmers of firefly light appeared behind the windows."

And later:

"The tombs, ill-lit by television light, where the people sat like the dead, the gray or multi-colored lights touching their faces, but never really touching them."

Both beautifully summarize the story's theme of a society succumbing to a technology that nullifies imagination and seduces us with a promise that we'd be required to expend little to no physical effort. In the day of "The Pedestrian" this applied to television; now it also encompasses (gasp) the Internet, where many sit for hours before "faint firefly light," endlessly clicking away....
