equilibrium equals ripoff
I just watched a movie that a friend lent me called Equilibrium. It tries to pretend it's the next Matrix, but anyone who has ever read Fahrenheit would see right through this unoriginal distopia. The main character is a cop whose job it is to burn art, literature, and music in an Orwellian society controlled by a much soggier version of Big Brother known as "the Father." Naturally, the cop stops taking his "anti-feeling" medicine (Sorry, Mr. Vonnegut, you too) and becomes a "sense-offender," much to the chagrin and suspicion of his fellow cops. Then he finds the underground and frees the minds of all the people, allowing them to feel. I guess someone got sick of waiting for a Fahrenheit movie and made his own. It's not too badly made, but how about putting a little of your own creativity your movie?

And when is Lois Lowry's "The Giver" going to be a movie? There's an excellent one languishing unfilmed.

What I heard was that hundreds of already made films languish on shelves for years, sometimes never to be released....Egads! Tons more get scripted, but never even put into production. (Let's make that thousands?)

That's too bad. It looks like it could be a kind of cool movie on it's own, with what looks like a pretty talented cast. It's an obvious ripoff, though.

I hope that somewhere among those shelved scripts, a good adaptation of The Giver is waiting to be discovered. It's a wonderful book.
