At least I think it was Ray Bradbury. The plot had to do with aliens going on vacation to visit the earth, because we had discovered nuclear energy. They wanted to see if we would survive and not destroy ourselves. They had watched other civilizations go through this critical period in their development.

I read a story like this many, many years ago and the plot has always stayed with me.
