I have been very blessed to have had John take me to meet Mr. Bradbury. I had read a few of his works, and John had read me others, and we even read poetry, but I honestly did not have a true appreciation of his talent until this week. As I now read Fahrenheit 451, I'm actually quite sad that I had not read it before meeting Mr. Bradbury. I wonder what I would have said. Perhaps I would have been even more tongue tied than I already was. How DO you speak intelligently TO the author about his works? It seems anything I would have said might have seemed almost juvenile. We spoke of France. France. I love Paris. He loved Paris. At least we connected on that level. I feel somewhat cheated, though, that I can not now reach out and, as a child to a kind uncle, ask him to share his thoughts as questions arise. Thank goodness he has left pieces of himself in precious books, stories, poems, and interviews, all like letters to those who love him.

How Southern California "invented" Mars. Yes, Ray is mentioned.
A chilling, highly disturbing, disillusioning lecture on the subject of current drone use can be found at BOOK TV. Author Medea Benjamin discusses her book DRONE WARFARE. I was reminded of F451's hound when she says scientists are predicting some of these drones will be made autonomous. The talk lasts about 1hr.30min. if you're interested: http://booktv.org/Program/1368...+Remote+Control.aspx

CART will be airing Ray Bradbury's 75th Birthday Tribute on Monday, August 20 at 6pm Pacific / 9pm Eastern and Friday, August 24 at 6:30pm Pacific / 9:30pm Eastern on SiriusXM Channel 80 (Book & Drama).
The program was produced by the California Artists Radio Theatre for The Thousand Oaks Library Foundation on August 22nd, 1995, featuring a speech by Mr. Bradbury on that occasion.
NASA'S Curiosity landed on Mars this past Sunday, August 5th, in the birthday month of Ray Bradbury. It seems like the great storyteller of The Martian Chronicles is right on schedule, telling a story of which he was well aware!
Sincerely, Peggy Webber

Stephen King was on Craig Ferguson last night (this morning). When asked who influenced him as a wee lad he said there were two primary witers, both from California, first was Ray and second was Richard Matheson.
