How's this for an encapsulation of humankind's exploration of space to date:

A good one. And encapsulation is a good word.

Those images reminded me of this title sequence:

Incidentally, one of Bradbury's 1960s MARTIAN CHRONICLES screenplays features a robotic probe that (if I recall correctly) goes ahead of the astronauts to explore the planet. I've been trying to find out whether this has any precursor in either SF or projected space technology of the time. So far, I've turned up nothing specific, just vague references to automated probes. It's just possible that Ray was ahead of the game where Curiosity is concerned.

No other person has been singled out for a name on the Planet Mars. So, we can assume this tune must now be drifting across the red dunes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8aFLB5b3mqU

That's fascinating... Is this screenplay published anywhere?

Two of Ray's MARTIAN CHRONICLES screenplays have been published in THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES: THE COMPLETE EDITION (so-called). One dates from c.1965 (but is misleadingly labelled as 1963 in the book), and another from 1997.

Ray also completed OTHER screenplays for MC in 1961 and 1978, neither of which has been published.

I can't remember for certain which one contains the automated probe/robot, but I think it's the published 1965 one.
