Hello all,

I am a school librarian and some of the English teachers in my building are looking to find a poem that has a theme that can be compared to "All summer in a day". This should be one that is accessable to 9th graders. I have searched for hours, but thought I'd turn to the experts before I tear my hair out.

Any thoughts?

Thank you,

Brad Malone

The works of Frost, Whitman, and Hopkins come first to mind. Which Ones? Try these for starts:
Robert Frost
Nothing Gold Can Stay (in New Hampshire list) http://www.ketzle.com/frost/

Walt Whitman
There Was A Child Went Forth http://www.liglobal.com/walt/poetry/childwentforth.shtml

Gerard Manley Hopkins
I Wake and Feel the Fell of Dark, Not Day http://www.bartleby.com/122/45.html

I hope these help, or at least offer some food for thought!

Note also that 'Gerard Manley Hopkins' (a Roman Catholic priest no less) is one of Ray's favorite poets.

Yes, Nard. I once sent a complete collection of GMH's poems to Mr. Bradbury for which I received a very kind and a genuinely appreciative response for the item! http://www.mcs.drexel.edu/~gbrandal/Illum_html/Hopkins.html

I can understand why Hopkins (and Dylan Thomas, no doubt) appeals to Mr. Bradbury, as they, like he, are masters of concise imagery (i.e. forming the desired images in the mind of the reader by using a few well-chosen words).
