For years now I've been hearing that this was a moving in the works, but various matters kept delaying its production. Does anyone know the status of this film? Last I heard, Mel Gibson was going to direct, and Ray had penned at least one version of a possible script.

Sorry, but as of December 2000, Mel is out. The new director is the guy who made Shawshank Redemption

In a recent interview, Mr. Bradbury stated that he is doing the screenplay. mel will not direct, but his production company, Icon Films, will produce. Mr. Bradbury also stated that he is doing screenplays for "The Illustrated Man," and "The Martian Chronicles."
