True, Ray takes artistic license, and there were NEVER lions at that library (stone, or, presumably, otherwise.) I beg to differ regarding the ravine, though. Photographs can't do it justice.

Just received an email from Ray, thanking me for the photos, and sending me "much love" - he's swell!

Also, writer Kim Stanley Robinson and actor Jerry Orbach are from Waukegan. I knew there were a couple other famous folks, but had disremembered the names.

Of course, we all know about Jack Benny, although actually born in Chicago.

Doug: But Jack Benny grew-up in Waukegan.

Recently met a fellow who has worked at CBS for 37 years, during the big-time radio years and the golden age of television, and knew Jack Benny. He said every time Jack would come into CBS he had 30, sometimes 40 people trailing him. There was no one else like it at the time. Jack always had a crowd around him.

I'll be seeing the fellow tomorrow and again thru-out the month. Certainly hope to gain more stories.

At lunch, one of my fellow employees came up to say that last night he was doing the crossword puzzle in the current TV Guide. There was a Ray Bradbury question and he was stumped. Ray Bradbury T_ _ _ _ _ _ was his clue. He was delighted that I knew the answer.

My surreal life: I am lucky to have a real bookshop walking distance from my home. That bookshop specializes in science fiction and more specifically Ray Bradbury, the owners having known Ray for forty plus years. Last night, I walked over there to listen to George Clayton Johnson’s talk on writing. When I got home I turned on the TV to the Twilight Zone. What was being aired? ‘Kick the Can’ by George Clayton Johnson.

As an aside, George and his partner Jeff have produced a handful of “homemade” DVDs, with one on Ray’s 87th birthday and the other on his 88th birthday. They both have videos of the crowds and commentary by George. A clip of Icarus Montgfier Wright is in both. The 87th also has the reading and presenting of Ray’s special citation Pulitzer.

The people in the writing group were interested in these DVDs so extras are being made. If anybody here is interested feel free to email info@mysteryandimagination.com and inquire about pricing and availability.
