When Mikhail Gorbachev was in power, ( I can't remember exactly where it took place) but it was at a time when Ray was the most popular science fiction author in Russia. Somehow Ray met Gorbachev, and was told by Mikhail himself that he was his daughters most favorite writer. (And I wouldn't doubt it if Gorby read The Martian Chronicles either)
