The Motion Picture Academy is working on a restoration of the 1963 Oscar nominated short subject. Today Mr. B and George Clayton Johnson had a private screening of the initial restoration.

Afterwards? It's still daylight out in that photo! I thought this was an evening event.

I called George Monday about trying to meet with him Wednesday briefly to go over some things concerning a short film we're considering from one of his stories. He said that he couldn't make it because of the Icarus thing, maybe later in the week.

Mr B's still got that thing around his neck from the WeHo book fair!? That's funny. Or is that a new one from the Academy? As we were leaving the book fair Sunday, someone tried to help him remove the thingy around his neck with his name on it, but he resisted, saying that he wanted everybody to know who he was! Funny man.

George always has that plastic bag full of his books.

Wish I could have been there, but Neil Diamond did his best to entertain me anyway.

The photo was taken around 6 p.m., that is the evening and the sun is still up.

The Academy requires all guests to wear a badge.

Does this mean the film will get a (re)release, or be issued on DVD? I've wanted to see it for years.

Here is an article from 1976, written by Jules Engel - director of Icarus Montgolfier Wright:

I've shown this enchanting little film (along with the Mike Wallace interview the night of the moon landing) at various lectures and classes over the years, and it's always extremely well-received by all ages. It was the made the year I was born (and the same year SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES was published), so I've always had an affinity for it.

The most common comment I hear after each screening is, "My God, Bradbury only missed predicting the moon landing by one month!" If it's someone I know fairly well, I'll tell them, "Oh, he knew it was going to happen in July. He only picked August because that's the month when he was born!"

Hey, Phil...quick correction...Osmund Evans was the director of Icarus, not Jules Engel. Jules' credit on the film was producer with Herb Klynn as executive producer.

Jules had very little (if any) day-to-day involvement on the film, and from interviews it appears that the amount of credit he took for it became a point of contention at Format Films.

It's probably unauthorised, and this DOESN'T look like a restored version, but ICARUS is on Youtube:

That is not the restored version.

It looks like a transfer of one of the Pyramid Films prints from the late 60's/early 70's. It's a really bad print, too; it's suffering from severe cyan-layer fade. That's why everything looks so red.

I'm pleased to hear that isn't the restored version! I'd like to see the restored version go into circulation somehow, to drive out these scruffy versions.

A semi-restored version by of Icarus Montgolfier Wright. I think this restoration was done by Jetlagger.

To the best of my knowledge the full restoration is still in the works by the Motion Picture Academy.

Actually, jkt, that's the exact same version as the one I linked to in July 2011 - which jetJagger says is NOT the restored version.
